Remote Support
When MicroBX is installed, the remote support software TeamViewer is also installed.
If you need help, phone us and click the icon 'MicroBX Remote Support' on your Desktop.
After that, we can remotely control your computer and help you with the installation.

If Teamviewer does not work on your computer, please use the menu:
OPTIONS-->MAINTENANCE-->COMPRESS WHOLE MICROBX FOLDER
If you are connected to the Internet, the archive will be mailed to our support department,
else you must manually send the file 'c:\microbx.7z' as e-mail attachment to <support@microbx.de>!
If your computer is connected to the Internet, MicroBX will send us every night a status mail with the following content:
Company name, number of phone calls yesterday, number of phone calls last 7 days.
The hotel version appends also date/time of last Check-in and of the last posted phone call.
This way, we try to determine faults before they bother you!

How does MicroBX start automatically when the computer is started?
MicroBX may be installed as client or as server. The server maintains the connection to the PABX and records all data – it should be running at all times, unless the PABX can store data internally. A MicroBX client uses the server's data and prepares reports and displays – if it doesn't run, no data will be lost. You may have several clients.
The server is always supervised by a watchdog service, which will restart it in case of trouble. The watchdog service may also supervise other programs, if required. It is started as 'NT Authority/Local Service', hence neither itself nor the programs that it has started are visible on the desktop.
If you want to use MicroBX, just start a second instance: it will detect that there is already a background server running and configure itself accordingly.

How do we calculate phone prices?
Telephone prices can either be delivered by the PABX or are calculated from a rates table.
The calculation is based on the area code and duration of call. MicroBX tries to use the same formula that is used by your phone company. We take account of reducec rates on week-ends or during off-peak periods, but – for example – bank holidays we are not aware of.
On screen or in reports you my use the buying or the selling price, in case you are reselling phone calls to a third party. The selling price is then increased by the mark-up rate, plus a handling fee, if so configured.
These rates and also VAT you can set up in the menu 'OPTIONS'-->'RATES AND FEES'.
If a VAT rate is configures, it will be displayed in reports.
In order to test the rates table, use the menu: 'CALL MONITOR'-->'TEST RATES'. From the Print Manager, you can print the whole table.

How do I license my MicroBX?
When MicroBX is first installed on a computer, it runs for six weeks with almost* all features and options. After six weeks, it needs an activation key, or else it stops recording new calls and only displays the existing ones.
In order to receive an activation key, please send the file MBXKEY.TXT from your desktop to < support@microbx.de>.
*The only option which is available ONLY in the licensed version is the determination of maximum trunk loading – for how many seconds or minutes most of your trunk lines were busy.

What are the technical requirements?
MicroBX always runs in background under Windows NT/2000/XP/..WIN10.
It also runs happily on VMs.
But there are a couple of pitfalls:

During installation:

you need Admin Rights and Elevation in order to install the watchdog service.
While installing, MicroBX inherits these rights from the installer.

In normal operation, MicroBX is started by the Watchdog Service and runs in background as 'Local System', hence it has elevation. If you start MicroBX as user, it should always be the second instance and therefore the 'Local Client'.
In this case, it does not need elevation and doesn't ask for it.
Apart from that, there is hardly any minimum requirement – it depends mainly on your patience!
The faster the computer, the sooner you have your reports. But you may just as well have them printed automatically overnight, then the speed doesn't matter.
The MicroBX server must be connected to the PABX via LAN, USB or Serial, depending on the PABX.
MicroBX can be run on a network. You must have one server, and you may have several clients on different computers.

The phone rates have changed!
MicroBX uses a separate rates table. If your phone company changes the rates, you can – after some time, usually! - download the new table from our web page.
Use the menu:
OPTIONS → INSTALLATION → INTERNET UPDATE
Download the installer, and select only the option 'RATES TABLE'.
Next, you open the menu: FILES → 'RATES TABLE' → 'LOAD NEW TABLE', select the table of your choice, and click OK.
That done, MicroBX will ask you to re-calculate the existing calls and offers you to set a start date for the new rates.

Print First Reports
How do I produce a report of all calls, sorted, for example, by extensions?
Use the menu:
REPORTS → CREATE NEW REPORT → LISTS → SORT BY EXTENSIONS.
Next, choose report period: for example 'LAST MONTH'.
Click OK, and when the computer asks whether to print at once, YES! Thereafter, you can also print the report.
Next time will be simpler, since you only have to click on REPORTS MANAGER → Print Selected Reports and then click on the report you just created.

Do we need a Buffer Box?
MicroBX runs under Windows XP/Vista/Win8..10 invisibly in background, so it does not really need an external storage device.
But, of course, it can only record data while the computer is switched on. So, if you can't guarantee that, then you may need an MBX-Box and we'll gladly sell you one.
If your power grid is not reliable, you should consider that your PABX won't make any calls without power. If, however, it has an uninterruptable power supply, then this UPS should also back up your computer.
Finally you should know that most PABX in case of power outage still allow calls from certain extensions. These extensions should be in trustworthy hands, because their calls can not be registered.

Find the correct PABX type.



MicroBX can understand more than 160 different types and makes of PABX, many of them with subtypes which are automatically recognized.
If you select, for example, 'Panasonic', then all types of Panasonic PABX should be recognized.
It is not that easy with SIEMENS: there is such a variety of Siemens Call Records, that it is impossible to recognize them automatically. You may have to try each of the six or so Siemens Types, in order to find the right one. You will find it, eventually!
If you really can't find a correct translation for your particular PABX, follow this procedure: record at least 50 calls, then use the menu:
OPTIONS→ MAINTENANCE → COMPRESS WHOLE MICROBX FOLDER.
If your computer is connected to the Internet, it will compress MicroBX, data and all, and mail the whole enchilada to us. If not, you may have to do that:
mail us the file 'c:\microbx\microbx.7z' to <support@microbx.com>.

Serial Comms - The Connector Pin-Out
How do I solder my cable? The plugs for serial ports (RS-232) on PC can have one of two forms:
DB-25 or DB-9 plugs (just count the pins, they tell you which one you have!).

Of these pins, you usually need: GND, Received Data (RD), and Data Terminal Ready (DTR).

The DTR line allows the computer to signal when it is ready to receive data, so that you don't loose any records.


On the computer side, you get their pin numbers from our table. On the PABX side, it depends on the manufacturer. Usually you find the pin-out in the User's Manual, or even better: they already have a ready-made cable.
